Are Natural Beauty Products Better? | Lab Muffin Beauty Science

“Are natural beauty products better for you?” “Should I try to avoid chemicals in my beauty products?” These is probably the most common question I get asked, so here’s your answer!

I talk about:

* What exactly is a chemical?
* What’s the difference between natural and synthetic chemicals?
* Are natural ingredients safer?
* Should you avoid ingredients you can’t pronounce?
* Should you reduce the number of chemicals you’re exposed to?

Fun facts:
This topic was the reason I started my blog!
I dropped a laptop on my head while making this video and gave myself a concussion.
It took me about 20 takes to get myself to say all those chemical names properly…

Yes!!!! Its easy to fall into the natural hype. I unfortunately did and messed up my skin badly (huge breakouts, irritation and impaired skin barrier). Not to mention natural products end breaking the bank for the most part.

6:28 Are there any natural ingredients for skin and hair that are actually proven to be effective? Or is it really impossible to say that certain natural ingredient really works because of the way peer-reviewed scientific experiments are conducted?
If there are any proven ones, please make a video on this topic. Thank you.

I have so many different allergies and sensitivities she trying to find skin and hair care that won’t give me a flare up has been so daunting. Thanks for explaining the actual science behind all of this, I might be able to actually figure out which ingredients I need to limit and/or avoid ☮️

If people knew how many physiological functions happen inside a plant (and how many byproducts) they wouldn’t advocate for natural products. There are so many factors that can affect this reactions that you can never be sure what is inside a plant and in what amount. I mean, some plants are used to clean the soil from heavy metals because plants absorb and retain a million things from the environment. Why would anyone choose natural products where you can’t control what goes into it and the amount when specific chemical can be synthesized in a lab, without contamination and knowing exactly how much and what is in it.

  17. @IntentionalB on March 20, 2025 at 10:26 pm

Like it? I loved it! I’m so sick and tired of the "all natural" wave 🤨 like it’s clearly stated we just need to be well informed, that’s all.

Nail tech here, I work in a day spa that also does facials body treatments etc. I regularly have clients that tell me how important natural ingredients are and how bad "chemicals" are, all while I am actively polymerizing plastics onto their nail plates. People are wild.

  26. @pranjalbhosale1892 on March 20, 2025 at 10:34 pm

Can you talk about parabens please…there are may different opinions about them not sure what to think…

  27. @charliemendez9991 on March 20, 2025 at 10:35 pm

I hope no one thinks that synthetically colored, artificially flavored, sugar-free (but aspartame/sucralose sweetened) drinks are healthy after watching this.

  28. @heidit8682 on March 20, 2025 at 10:39 pm

You’re the best! For all the fear mongers out there 🙏🏼

  29. @wendyhardman8075 on March 20, 2025 at 10:42 pm

I LOVE that you refer to scientists in this video as “she” and “her”. So great to represent females in science!!!!

  30. @juliamanning2658 on March 20, 2025 at 10:43 pm

I am British, living in Germany. Germans are obsessed with toxicity in cosmetics. They think i am nuts for using vaseline.😂

  31. @trefleacinqfeuilles7193 on March 20, 2025 at 10:46 pm

Actually you might be able to tell synthetic water apart from natural mountain water with isotope analysis, witch is really cool, but, yeah.

    You are holy grail

  36. @agostinabarello2037 on March 20, 2025 at 10:48 pm

This is great! thank you for the info and explanation.
I am trying to be more ecofriendly in the sense that I want to reduce the amount of plastic that I throw away. I want to start using a solid shampoo for example but I can’t find one that is NOT parabens free(etc). What I mean is that I want the same quality as my traditional shampoo and not to mention the certainty that it is made in a laboratory and not in someone’s kitchen. I think that established companies (small or large well-known brands) do not produce this type of product (solid shampoo with similar composition of a liquid one) since they could not be competitive with all this "natural" marketing, which is a shame because it would be a real benefit for the environment.
i’m not an expert this is just my point of view.

  37. @vijeyalakshmis5456 on March 20, 2025 at 10:49 pm

I’m Indian,Whatever you say there is no doubt. I stopped using shampoo and soap for a year I only used raw herbal powder like turmeric and shikai. I really have healthy and very long hair, and spotless skin👍
    Wow

a very very well scripted video!!! thanks for the work

  39. @Jeanne7774 on March 20, 2025 at 10:50 pm

This is very, very interesting and enlightening. I have learned so much that I never knew and never would have imagined I’d come to find out, about the reality of the natural world… knowledge is power. Thank you. 🤔😊

  40. @sakinaabadi318 on March 20, 2025 at 10:52 pm

That is the endless argument I always have with my relatives and friends 😭😭😭… natural doesn’t always mean better of safer !!

  41. @LapisDemon on March 20, 2025 at 10:54 pm

While the video is overall correct and I appreciate the motivation behind it to debunk both "omg this product got chemicals in it" as well as that not all "nature"-labelled (even eco-certified) products aren’t necessarily good for you, I wish this video would not make some substances such as Petrolatum seem like a "good thing" for one’s skin either. But I understand that this was more of a basic video to clear some general misconceptions many may have.

  42. @deadinside8719 on March 20, 2025 at 10:55 pm

    Snake poison is also natural
Let’s put it in face 😂

  43. @Laura-tb7nm on March 20, 2025 at 10:57 pm

This video should be translated in every language and pushed on every single person‘s social media or phone without a possibility to scroll until fully watched!

Clear, informative and nerd! the best combination ever!!! Thank you😍🤓

  45. @moth_belly on March 20, 2025 at 11:00 pm

    Thank you for sharing.

I’m so sad and I feel so lost. I lost my Dad to cancer a month ago, and watching how fast he deteriorated was so shocking, I went on a total non-toxic spree. Threw out most of my makeup and was glued to EWG’s website only to find out they’re grifters. I feel so lied to. Thank you again for the clarification.

  46. @valentinamesa6643 on March 20, 2025 at 11:01 pm

What a good video ! It would be very interesting if you make a video about what it’s a renewable and not renewable components, and how a chemicals impacts environment depending on their sources.
    Thanks

Good balanced info in this video.
Why do people think some of the best medicines for the worst diseases are found in nature? Chemicals in found in nature kill the best(worst?) disease causing organisms. Sometimes, it takes a strong chemical(toxin) to kill the best offender.
